Armen Martirosysn

Composer, Chairman of the Academy Board

 

Armen Martirosyan was born on February 25, 1963, in Yerevan. In 1970–1975, he studied at the Yerevan A. Spendiaryan Music School, and in 1980–1985 at the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory, in the composition department, in the class led by  Edward Mirzoyan. From 1985 to1990, he worked at the Yerevan Artistic Education Center, and in 1991–1992, served as the musical director of the State Jazz Orchestra of Armenia.Throughout his musical career, he worked not only in Armenia, but also Switzerland, the USA, Russia, Georgia, Syria, and several other countries. From 1991–1995, he worked in Switzerland as a pianist, composer, and arranger. From 1995–1997, he worked at the Armenian State Song Theatre as an arranger. From 1997–2011, he was the artistic director and conductor of the State Jazz Orchestra of Armenia. During those years, the orchestra took part in numerous festivals and performed alongside the world-renown pianist and composer Chick Corea.

He composed the music for Armenia's entries in the Eurovision Song Contest in 2006, 2010, and 2015 ("Without Your Love," "Apricot Stone", "Face The Shadow"). He is also the composer of “Karmir, Kaput, Tsiranaguin” "Hayastane Du es", "Cilicia" and other works. At the National Music Awards of Armenia in 2006, "Karmir, Kaput, Tsiranaguin" was awarded the Best Song of the Year.

As a composer and arranger, he has shared more than 300 of his works to the audience. He has written music for several films and performances, including "Lord have Mercy" and "Khathabalada." Famous works include "Mountain Dance," "Masisamba," and "Eastern Blues." He has collaborated with prominent musicians and singers, such as Charles Aznavour, Chick Corea, Jivan Gasparyan and others. 

In 2007, he was awarded Gold Medal of the Ministry of Culture and Youth of the Republic of Armenia and the title of Honored Art Worker of Armenia. In 2008, he was awarded the "Movses Khorenatsi" Medal. In 2010, he moved to Vancouver, Canada, where he works in his own studio.

Since 2024, he has been the Chairman of the Board of the Armenian National Music Academy.
